A Pretty Nice Haircut

I’ve been thinking about taste, specifically music taste, as I work my way through Carl Wilson’s Let’s Talk About Love. Over at Glide Magazine, I wrote a brief essay about my struggles with my impulse to influence my children’s musical taste, including a closer look at one of the 90s quintessential commentaries on the commodification of taste- Pavement’s “Cut Your Hair.”

I was sure that a later draft of this essay would include a paragraph where I ground some of my ideas in Wilson’s work, but it never quite made it in. Still, this piece is informed by his ideas, and I highly recommend his book, which has been recently reissued with additional essays by other music writers of note.
